Patti Labelle's Lite Cuisine: Over 100 Dishes With To-Die-For Taste Made With To-Live-For Recipes
Published in Hardcover by Gotham Books (14 April, 2003)
Authors: Patti Labelle and Laura Randolph Lancaster
Average review score:

Patti Cooks! (but we always knew that)
Patti Labelle is legendary for her cooking stories from on the road - for years, she had a rider in her contract that a full kitchen be available at her shows for her to prepare post-concert meals.
Patti has taking her love (and considerable knowledge) of food, and put this in a book that also contains family recollections, words of encouragement, and smart living advice. It's a great book to give as a gift (especially to someone who loves to cook, but needs to watch their diet), and a whole lot of fun to read, and prepare her meal suggestions.
This book focuses on low-fat, low-sodium and low-carb meals, but does not sacrifice taste (nor tasty ingedients) in favor of diet. There are some rather indulgent recipes (the Chocolate Pecan Pie is AWESOME), but they are prepared smart.
Patti's stories that accompany many of the recipes are always enjoyable (is there a more down to earth singing star than this fine lasy?), but also poignant - her discussions of her mother's death by diabetis, and her talk of dealing with having the disease herself make you want to eat smarter.
Buy 2 copies of this book - one for a friend who needs to be cooking smarter (we all have one), and one for yourself. It's a great mix of food and wisdom as only Patti could deliver.

Dear Patti...Thank YOU!!!!
Patti LaBelle's recipes are WONDERFUL!!! THANK YOU PATTI for taking the time out of your busy life to share this HEALTHY cook book with us. Your "Chicken Cacciatore" is a mouth watering dish!!! We love your cook book..your recipes..(of course we love ALL OF YOUR MUSIC)...and we Love You!! I would recommend this cook book to everyone. What a tasty collection of healthful eating!!! Patti has WOWED me once again!!!

Healthy but Delicious Recipes!!
Firstly, Patti LaBelle is my favorite entertainer of all time so whatever she releases, I am there to get it. Although I am a thin, nineteen year old male, there are some recipes in here that I not only will try but have tried kind of. The most appealing part of the book is that the meals are delicious but they are also healthy. Whether one is overweight or not, has diabetes, heart problems or not, everyone needs to eat healthy because it is one of the best ways to remain healthy. This is no exception. The meals are great and easy to understand. So, get with the program and buy this sorely universally needed cookbook by soul cook and soul singer Patti LaBelle. I was taken away by how good these dishes actually are. They are so very easy to do so do not worry about not really being a cooker.

The Gift to Be Simple: Life in the Amish Country
Published in Hardcover by Chronicle Books (May, 2001)
Author: Bill Coleman
Average review score:

outstanding
Having grown up in Ohio and having to go through Amish country in eastern Indiana this book brought back
so many memories. The pictures are wonderful and bring out the beauty of the Amish way of life. I have always
been fascinated with the Amish and was fortunate enough to get into an Amish home in Indiana and ths book brings about the essence of these plain, and simple people. It is a book that I will always treasure because of it's beauty and simplicity. It certainly needs no words to accompany the pictures. The pictures of the children certainly show their enjoyment of life.

A Shared Gift
I have many books of photographs and this is the most beautiful one I have seen. It was a gift to me that Bill Coleman shared these photos!

He has managed to capture the spirit of the Amish - their simple life and their everyday lifestyle. You see their spirit shining through in these photos. The children are particularly beautiful and look so happy and innocent.

The photos of the landscape are equally wonderful. It was only on my third *reading* of this book that I realized what they were missing : electric poles and wires. These photos could have been taken 100 years ago, the landscape is so unspoiled!

I thank Bill Coleman for giving me this glimpse into the Amish world. Although I live not far from where he took these photos, they allowed me an inside look.

Beautiful...
The photography in this collection is outstanding. It is, not only a glimpse into Amish life, but it is extremely beautiful artwork.

The photgrapher captures the simplicity of Amish life in well-executed images. The photographs cover all aspects of Amish life, without being overly intrusive.

If you have ever been fascinated with the Amish lifestyle, pick up this beautiful book.

While I understand the lack of description, [the editor/author did not want to draw away from the simplicity of the photographs--and the point of this book is simplicity], I think that something was missing in this respect.

If you are looking for the definitive book on Amish, I would have to tell you to pick up this book AND something with more written information. The combination would be a great asset.

I cannot, however, detract from the five stars that I have given this book, simply because of its beauty. It is wonderful.

Inspirational, Motivational, Tear-Jerking Bestseller
This book has truly been a blessing to my life. After reading it four times, I have been compelled to stop complaining and appreciate life, for I am truly blessed. Patti is truly a gem. She is a living testimony. Through the tears and the pain, heartache and betrayal, like a phoenix, Patti rises above it all. She shows that there is gold at the end of the rainbow we call life. This book is no less than Remarkable, compelling, and exceptional. Patti tells all, and each revelation brings about a major learning experience that makes her the powerful, spiritual, and "down-to-earth" Diva that she is today. As you read, it leaves you not only NOT wanting to put it down, but selfishly wishing for a sequel. If there were a class on autobiographies of the stars, this would be a Required Reading. Patti's life has only just begun and through "Don't Block The Blessings: Revelations of a Lifetime," Patti shows us, without reservation, that we can truly overcome anything, as long as we don't block the blessings. Everything in life happens for a reason, and if you learn from each life's experience, you will transcend and begin to appreciate people, as well as yourself, ...just don't block the blessings

Excellent, and intriguing
Don't Block the Blessings is an excellent book. When I began to read the first couple of words, I knew that this would be one book that I would not be able to put down. I often found myself reading the book while taking tests, taking a bath, while exercising, and sometimes while riding in the car. I think that the reason it caught my attention was because some of the issues that Mrs. LaBelle faced, I have gone through also. Although I am only sixteen years old, I have been in similar situations. Like Patti, I have often feared death, and I let that bother me for so long. I have lost an aunt, tragically, and me not being able to say to her what I needed to say still haunts me. After reading the book, I've learned to deal with my problems, as did Patti. I know Mrs. LaBelle will remain a true inspiration in my life because through her book, and through God, she has helped me to learn to never block the blessings. I believe that if America were to live by this motto, it would be a much better place. We need more people , like Mrs. Patti LaBelle, to speak out and help make this world a better haven. I commend her and may God continously bless her. I will remain her number one fan!!!

Katherine
Published in Hardcover by Houghton Mifflin Co (July, 1954)
Author: Anya Seton
Average review score:

Medieval History brought vividly to life
One April morning of 1366, a young girl rides to join her sister at court in Windsor. The young girl was Katherine. There, a boorish knigh, Sir Hugh falls madly in love with her, but Katherine isn't interested. She is persuaded to marry him for her own security, but she has no love for him, nor even any affection.

Katherine has also caught the eye of the King's third son, John of Gaunt, the Duke of Lancaster. Something in the handsome duke's kiss on her wedding day, arouses in Katherine feelings she had never known and she seeks out the duke at every opportunity.

In the laws of God and man, their love is forbidden, but the seed of passion has been sown which will change the course of English history...

This was a brilliant book, difficult to put down. All the history is there, but told through the eyes of the characters, making it that much more real. There's even a cameo appeareance by Goeffrey Chaucer! (Who wrote the Canterbury Tales.)

One to re-read again.

Reviewed by Annette Gisby, author of Silent Screams and Shadows of the Rose.

One of the finest historical novels ever written
I fell in love with this book the first time I read it, more than 40 years ago, as a teenager who hated history and never dreamed the past could be so exciting and romantic. I must have cried my way through three boxes of tissues before I finished it. I still have my falling-apart first edition hardbound copy, and I reread it once a year. If only more writers could recreate history and make the reader care about the people who made it, we might be a wiser and kinder civilization now. Anya Seton was a master, one of a kind, and I'm glad she lived and wrote every time I pick up "Katherine" again for another venture into her 14th century world.

Well-researched page-turner; it belongs on every bookshelf.
This work is well-written, factual, and breathes such life into the characters and time in which they lived (15th-century England) that the reader becomes so engrossed as to actually feel drawn into the everyday existence and "romance" of the Medieval World, its history, philosophy, religion, intrigue, etc.

It is one of the best books I've ever read, and I heartily agree with other reviewers. I don't know how many copies I've given away to the "literate uninformed" and I don't know how many times I've read it, but I developed an incredible crush on John of Gaunt--enough to research his life--and was thrilled that he committed the unheard of sin of marrying his longtime mistress,Katherine. It was no wonder that the Church fathers damned her to hell; she was beautiful, intelligent, and a woman for the ages.

While I was teaching medieval history to my 6th grade students, I used much of the factual information as reference during my lectures (also authenticating Miss Seton's research). She vividly describes events, places and people to such a degree that history came alive and vital. I loved every minute of the many times I read and reread "Katherine" and I will no doubt read it again very soon. I have never found another book that I identified with so closely, and everytime I find someone who has not been exposed to Anya Seton and her works, I descend upon them with a vengence.

Why hasn't "Katherine" been made into a film? It has all the characteristics of a smash hit: great plot, real people, romance, intrigue, excitement, and visual splendor. Mr.Spielberg where are you?

The Reeve's Tale
Published in Hardcover by Prime Crime (13 December, 1999)
Author: Margaret Frazer
Average review score:

The best Frevisse yet
In my opinion, this is the best mystery in the Sister Frevisse series of mysteries. Why is this so? Well, firstly, there are several deaths, with the finger of suspicion pointing several ways. The identity of the guilty party is not certain until the end. [If you knew who it was without peeking, don't tell!].

Secondly, there are several sub-plots each with their own mysteries. There is the uncertain fate of the nunnery's steward who has been accused of being a serf and thus stands to lose his freedom - and that of his children. We do not know who accused him, and why. There is also the mystery about a certain very prosperous man in the village and his wife and family. What are his intents, and those of his wife? Was she really guilty of all that the village gossip alleged?

There are other puzzles to follow - such as who will get a certain piece of land, what will happen to the harvest, and so forth. The depiction of village life, which includes several scenes of cases being decided by the elders, is alone worth reading this novel for. It is rare that mystery novels set in the medieval era focus in such detail on the life of ordinary villeins (the proper term) and free peasants.

I look forward to reading more of Sister Frevisse's adventures. The series will not appeal to all, including those who are more knowledgeable about the period and/or tired of medieval mysteries using nuns or monks as sleuths. To enjoy this book, you must like medieval mysteries and enjoy reading about the nitty-gritty details of convent life (some of which can be less than pleasant).

My favorite current medieval mystery series.
This is one series that really deserves the comparison with Ellis Peters' Brother Cadfael series. Fortunately, I don't believe in hierarchies, because I'd be hard-pressed to choose between the two. Frazer is a very gifted writer and these work both as historical novels and as mysteries. Since Frevisse, like Cadfael is a Benedictine, it is interesting to see glimpses of how the order had changed over the centuries.

This is typical of Frazer: the characterizations are excellent and often complex, the background is well drawn and the story is gripping. Frevisse, having more experience in dealing with the outside world than most of her sisters is sent to serve as temporary representative for lands that her convent co-owns. This is a complex job; she must manage to work and share authority with people whose interests are opposed to the convent's. Frazer gives us a vivid account of the machinations that underly the struggle to control land and wealth, even among the peasantry.

Excellent mediveal mystery !!!!!
This is the first book of this author that i read. I picked up the book purely because it was set in the 15th century England and wanted some idea about a typical English village of that time. And I was not disappointed. Very well written and good characterisation. The story starts slowly but I think this is required for a sound understanding of the settings, the characters, their relationships and their respective roles in the village. In addition to the intriguing mystery, the descriptions of the local governemnt and the role of church in those times is a good learning. In particular, the judicial process of those times has been described well. The dialogue is sharp and at times, witty as well. But dont look for a murder from the first chapter. Be fascinated by the judicial process in the beginning and then get into the nystery as it starts to develop and soon couple of corpses appear. The finger of suspicion does point several ways. Also, there are several sub plots as well. A very engrossing book. Worth reading for the description of the village life, the court and judicial process, and the lifes of the ordinary people. You will not be disappointed in reading this.

The Short and Tall of It

the short and tall of it review
An amazing story of the struggle of human existence. Everyone sees the outside personna, but if they look long enough the inner beauty comes though. Put yourself in the author's shoes and you realize that life is a contant stuggle. This book teaches us that acceptance of who we are, asking for help, and having the courage to do whatever our hearts desire, we can achieve our dreams no matter our size, abilities, or appearance. We are who we make ourselves to be. Our biggest disability is ourselves. Read the book -- you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll love, and most importantly you'll learn.

Incredible Inspiration
Donna Lancaster has an remarkable story to tell and she does it beautifully in this book. Disabled from birth, she overcame obstacles that would make most people cringe in order to live and function in a "normal" world. But to me the most remarkable part of her story is her decision to give up her artificial legs and the emotional safety of appearing like almost everyone else. Short in stature she may be, but Donna has the heart and spirit of a giant.

BRILLIANT AUTHOR!!!
THIS BOOK IS GREAT! IT MAKES YOU COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS AND LAUGH AT THE SAME TIME. PLUS I RECOMMEND IT FOR READERS BOTH YOUNG AND OLD. READ DONNA LANCASTER'S "THE SHORT AND TALL OF IT" TODAY!!!

LaBelle Cuisine: Recipes to Sing About

Authors: Patti LaBelle, Laura B. Randolph, and Laura Randolph Lancaster
Average review score:

Sing With Patti In The Kitchen!
I bought this book off of Amazon, never having seen it in the stores. What a pleasant surprise! I'd expected another book of soul-food, Southern cooking (which is what I was looking for). Ms. LaBelle's book has plenty of down-home-type recipies familiar to those of us in the South, such as her pot roast and her Southern fried chicken, but also has recipes that reflect a wider, more modern cooking trend, such as Caribbean fish steaks and shrimp fried rice. Her Macaroni and Cheese recipe is to die for!

Unlike so many other 'celebrity' cookbooks, the recipes here are well-written and easy to follow. I've cooked a couple of dozen recipes here, and all have worked as published.

This cookbook can be a terrific introduction to Southern cooking as well as an illustrated biography of its author. I've been a fan of LaBelle for many years and was delighted to read her autobiographical segments. This book is a great blend of cookbook and memoirs, and can be enjoyable even if only for reading!

Labelle Cuisine Makes Me Sing!
Ms. Patti! Ms. Patti! Ms. Patti! I love your recipe book! The potato salad was outstanding at Thanksgiving and the crab cakes were awesome at Christmas! Even my two teenage sons have tried your recipes. I really enjoyed your stories too. I am sending the book as gifts from now on! It is Geechie-Geechie Ya-Ya GREAT! Thanks again Patti.

One Word- AMAZING!
When I met Patti Labelle about two years ago she said that she loved my name...well Patti I love your recipes! This book is wonderful. I received it as a Christmas present from a sorority sister. I made the mac & cheese, collard greens, and the peach cobbler and they all tasted great. The mac & cheese was the best. My family now thinks I'm a really good cook. Thanks Patti.

Imagine
Published in Hardcover by Birch Lane Pr (December, 1990)
Authors: John Lennon, Lynn Lancaster-Poh, and Tilman Reitzle
Average review score:

Sanitized but invigorating
John Lennon posthumously narrates his life, with input by Yoko Ono, former wife Cynthia, sons Sean and Julian, and friend Elliot Mintz (those other three guys declined to participate). Film certainly captures moments; his youth, Beatlemania, Yoko, the "Bed-in", his deportation troubles, etc. But other unsavory elements aren't mentioned; such as his brief heroin addiction, and even though May Pang offers comment, his affair with her is only touched on briefly. Am I poo-pooing this? No. I'm just describing it. There's a few moments of uneasy premonition, such as when John laughs when a fan letter predicts an assassination attempt, or when he states that fortunately he doesn't know the future. Highlights include verbal judo between John and cartoonist Al Capp, as well as the music and a peek into his treasure trove of home movies. A must-have for fans, and a rough demo of "Real Love" opens the movie, which the other three Beatles completed in 1995.

exellent!
I am a huge fan of John Lennon, so I had to see this movie, and Im glade that I did! It really showed him as he was in private, or in public, altough some things about him were never mentioned thast I thought were essential to understanding this man. It showed his agressive, as well as his gentle side. I did cry at the end, when his blood stained glasses go flying, I just broke down. word of advice, have a box of tissues at the end. The nudity is not all that bad, you never really see anything(just barley) you wouldin't see in a pg-13 film, except for a few brief seconds, and the swearing is minimum.I reccomend this film to all John Lennon fans!

Great Film
I'm a huge John Lennon fan and this film just made my day. It was the most unbiased film on him I've ever seen. Usually it's either Yoko just going on about John or the other Beatles moaning about him. This was a positive movie to watch and enjoy.

Shunning
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 2001)
Author: Beverly Lewis
Average review score:

Best Book I have ever read!
I finishd the Shunning yesterday and today I am going out to buy the next 2 books, The Confession and The Reckoning. The details of the stories are great and so understanding. I live near Lancaster, Pa and so many times I have wondered what life was like to live the Amish ways. I always thought it would be nice to live the simple ways not realizing what those ways really were. I admire the families that can live so strictly and feel so happy. I feel for Katie and the dilema she is going through and I also feel for her parents. They are almost like my friends or family. Thank you Mrs. Lewis.

My first book by Bev Lewis...but definitely not my last!
I am an avid reader and lover of Amish history. These 2 passions drew me to a display containing "The Shunning" when we were traveling and stopped to eat at a little restaurant-gift shop. I just had to get up from my meal and take a look at the book. I was so interested I had to read it. The characters were exciting people, individual in spite of being identical! Katie especially intrigued me! She was so fiesty, so different, opinionated, yet family oriented. How could she expect to be happy at any one place when the whole world called to her? I felt empathy for Katie's Amish parents because having a daughter like her surely was a test in their community! Yet, I felt Katie's pain...her uncertainty...her desires...what part in her longterm future would Mary play? How could Katie endure without Dan, her soul mate? How could she marry a man she did not love? Why must she be forced to live without the beautiful, soothing music she adored? Was it sin, or simply protocol? It was easy to keep switching my loyalty from one group to the other...they all had some good ideas. I thought I understood Katie and her inquisitive nature, yet I wanted to scold her for being ungrateful and even spiteful to her parents at times. I seemed to have love-hate for one person, then another! I think this author, Bev Lewis, surely must have an interesting life....how else could she think of so many wonderfully surprising events? For a book that led one to think it was going to be about a fairly dull family, living in a fairly dull town, with fairly dull ideals, there certainly was a trememdous amount of excitement nontheless! People DID have feelings, they DID experience emotions, and Katie Lapp was determined to live them in addition to just feeling them! There are issues here that are presented so well, love and marriage, family life, faith, obedience to parents, loyalty, adoption, trust, life and death, grief and mourning, traditions, ways of life...and all of these are wrapped around one tiny, pink satin baby gown! When I saw I was on the last page, I was stricken....NO, THIS CANNOT BE ENDING...there is so much I do not know yet! What will happen to..what if...when will...why didn't....maybe they...if only.... I did not rest a moment until book number 2 was in my hands! I so fully appreciate the author's portrayal of the love of God, His plan of salvation and especially the individuality of each person in spite of their surroundings! Thanks, Bev!

There is nothing like a Great Read!
I really just enjoyed this book.My heart really went out to Katie as well as her family and close friends.I have learned so much about the"Amish"way of life through reading this book.I checked this book out from my local, public libary and have already purchased "The Confession and The Reckoning."The Shunning" is a fabulous read and I highly recommend it to anyone. Can't wait to read the other 2 books.
